Some of my Favorite Santa Barbara locations for Second Weddings, Vow Renewals and Later-in-Life Celebrations
Why Santa Barbara is Perfect for Later-In-Life Celebrations
For many couples, celebrations later in life are less about following tradition and more about creating a meaningful experience together. Whether it's a second marriage, a vow renewal, or simply honoring a new chapter, older couples often prioritize intimacy, beautiful surroundings, exceptional food, and time with the people who matter most.
Santa Barbara offers all of that effortlessly. With its relaxed coastal atmosphere, Spanish Colonial architecture, and walkable downtown, it's an ideal destination for couples who want a celebration that feels elegant without being overwhelming. Here are a few of my favorites:
Santa Barbara County Courthouse Weddings
The Santa Barbara Courthouse is one of the city's most iconic wedding locations. Its stunning architecture, colorful tilework, lush sunken gardens, and panoramic clock tower create a timeless backdrop for ceremonies and portraits. Many couples appreciate that they can have a beautiful, memorable celebration without the complexity of a large venue.
Royal Presidio of Santa Barbara
Dating back to 1782, this historic fort offers a unique backdrop for small ceremonies steeped in California history. The chapel features whitewashed adobe walls, colorful painted murals and furnished as it would have been in the late 18th century. Behind the chapel is the Presidio Orchard, which offers a beautiful outdoor option for either the reception or a wedding ceremony or elopement itself.
To host a wedding at El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park, you must first obtain a marriage license from any California County Clerk’s office https://www.countyofsb.org/apply-for-a-marriage-license
Santa Barbara Woman’s Club at Rockwood
This little beauty sits next to Rocky Nook Park and near the Santa Barbara Mission. It has magnificent oak trees surrounding it, with boulders and greenery alongside the shaded pathways. I especially love the outdoor space for wedding vows or small ceremonies, it’s just magical.
Arnoldi’s cafe
I love this little restaurant. It’s a local’s favorite, and it’s been around forever. The entrance has a vintage/retro feel to it.
It has a cosy outside courtyard in back, with string lights and bocce ball courts. When it's time to gather with family & friends, Arnoldi's Cafe offers the kind of warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes everyone feel at home. It combines historic charm, classic Italian comfort food, and inviting outdoor spaces that are ideal for intimate dinners and relaxed receptions.
Canary Hotel Rooftop
The Kimpton Canary Hotel, Santa Barbara overlooks the city's signature red-tiled roofs with sweeping views of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the rooftop provides a sophisticated yet laid-back setting for sunset cocktails, celebratory toasts, or simply soaking in the moment together.
Alice Keck Memorial Garden
Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden is one of Santa Barbara's hidden gems for couples planning a small, intimate outdoor wedding. With winding garden paths, mature trees, colorful flowers, and a peaceful pond, it offers a quiet escape in the heart of downtown. The relaxed setting feels romantic without being overly formal, making it a wonderful spot for exchanging vows surrounded by a handful of your closest family and friends.
Whether you're planning a private elopement, a small wedding, or simply looking for a beautiful spot for portraits after your courthouse ceremony, Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden is a wonderful choice.
Elings Park
Elings Park offers one of the most scenic settings in Santa Barbara for weddings and elopements. Perched above the coastline, the park combines rolling green lawns, stately old oak trees, and panoramic views of the Pacific, creating a backdrop that feels expansive yet peaceful. It's an excellent choice for couples who want to celebrate outdoors with a small group of family and friends, giving everyone plenty of room to relax and enjoy the setting.
Whether you're planning a simple ceremony or a larger gathering, Elings Park provides the kind of natural beauty that doesn't need much decoration; just the people you love and a view that's hard to beat.
Santa Barbara Beaches
For couples who feel most at home by the ocean, Santa Barbara's beaches offer a beautiful setting for intimate celebrations. Whether you're exchanging vows with just the two of you or gathering a small circle of family and friends, the sound of the waves and the open coastline create an unforgettable backdrop. If you're dreaming of an intimate beach wedding, Santa Barbara has no shortage of beautiful spots to choose from. Butterfly Beach is a favorite for its palm-lined shoreline and incredible sunsets, while Hammonds Beach offers a quieter stretch of sand with a more secluded feel. If you're looking for extra privacy, Loon Point is worth the short walk, rewarding you with dramatic coastal views and fewer people around. Arroyo Burro Beach, also known as Hendry's Beach, has a more relaxed, natural feel with wide stretches of sand, dramatic bluffs, and plenty of space to spread out. It's a wonderful option for couples looking for a laid-back coastal setting where the focus stays on the experience rather than the venue.
For couples who want both ocean views and a little more space for guests, Shoreline Park and Leadbetter Beach are excellent options. Both offer grassy ceremony areas overlooking the coastline, with easy access to the beach for portraits afterward.
Most beaches and coastal parks in Santa Barbara require a wedding permit, so it's worth planning ahead. If you're not sure which location is the best fit, I can help you choose a spot based on your guest count, the time of year, and the kind of experience you're hoping to create.
Palm Park Beach House
For couples looking for a relaxed coastal celebration, the Palm Park Beach House offers a charming beachfront setting along Cabrillo Boulevard. Located across from Chase Palm Park, this intimate venue blends classic Santa Barbara style with a laid-back oceanfront atmosphere. Guests can enjoy the inviting indoor space, step outside to take in views of the shoreline, and celebrate together as the warm evening light settles over the coast. With its convenient location, beautiful surroundings, and seamless indoor-outdoor flow, it’s a wonderful choice for small weddings, elopements, and gatherings.
Whether you’re exchanging vows, renewing them, or simply gathering your favorite people together, the city’s natural beauty and relaxed charm make it easy to create a day that feels like you. Santa Barbara provides the perfect backdrop for doing just that. I’d be honored to be there to document your celebration. If Santa Barbara is part of your story, I’d love the opportunity to preserve the moments that make this season of life so meaningful.
